Preserving Heritage: Our Story

The heritage of Killa Aul Palace traces its roots back to the 16th century. The palace, as it stands today, was established in 1590 A.D. and has been the esteemed residence of successive rulers spanning 19 generations till the present day. The royal family is directly descended from Gajapati Mukunda Deva, the last independent ruler of Kalinga, who held his court within the renowned Barabati Fort in Cuttack in 1567 AD. Raja Ram Chandra Deva, the elder son of the last independent Gajapati of Kalinga, laid the foundation of Killa Aul in 1590 A.D. following a treaty with the Mughals. The royal family's eventful history spans over 426 years, ensuring engaging conversations and captivating narratives when interacting with the hosts.

Over the years, the palace underwent various expansions and renovations under different rulers, resulting in an architectural style that beautifully amalgamates indigenous Odishan influences with those from neighboring regions. The intricate carvings, exquisite artwork, and sprawling courtyards bear testimony to the exceptional craftsmanship and skills of the artisans of that era. Recent years have witnessed dedicated endeavors to restore and safeguard the palace's historical significance. Restoration projects led by the hosts, Braj and Himantika along with their daughters, have been diligently working towards reinstating its original magnificence, accentuating its architectural features, and preserving its invaluable cultural heritage.

Today, Killa Aul Palace proudly stands as a testament to the region's illustrious history, captivating visitors with its resplendent architecture, historical eminence, and the captivating narratives it holds within its ancient walls. It has evolved into a sought-after tourist destination, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its rich legacy and relish the enchanting stories it lovingly preserves.
